Joe Matys took this of the Sturgeon moon on August 24th.

Ted Mills found this article on a ‘wildfire’ on Percy Lake: 1946. This seems to be the oldest record of a local wildfire fire.

A newspaper article about a wildfire near Percy Lake

Haliburton County News, Thursday, Sept. 26th, 1946: Despite repeated warnings on the part of Fire Wardens and lumbermen, a party of fishermen were instigators of a fire on the Percy Lake limits of the International Cooperage Co., which, had it not been for the circumspection of vigilant bushmen, might have soon developed into an imminent menace. Ignited several weeks previous, the fire smouldered thru the butts and trunks of the little cedars beside the lake, and during the recent period of dry weather they blazed up and the fire dilated over a wider area. Thanks to the united efforts of Mr. W. A. and Mr. A. H. Currys’ logging gangs, it was brought under control Thursday and we are assured that the danger is now past.

Water

The TSW is forecasting a ~30cm lake level drop. That would catch the ‘normal’ drawdown curve. The latest ‘x’ is hidden in the dip.

But, the rainfall doesn’t appear to be letting up, [precipitation since January has been at or above normal]. We may stay above the curve for a bit yet. (Lake level and precipitation charts are in the PDF.)

Politics, Municipal

Cut and pasted from local news:

Greg Bishop and Andrew Nowell are competing for mayor of Dysart et al, while Pat Casey will battle Walt McKechnie for the deputy mayor position. Barry Boice and Kirby Bagg are running for ward 5 councilor.

I’m pointing to this ‘all-candidates meeting’ because they say they will post on-line afterwards.

The ‘big issue’ seems to be a decision for the new council in February on Amalgamation. Some background:

  • The consultant’s report (Strategy Corp) was delivered to County council in November, 2020.
  • A single-tier government is one of just four models the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) presented to County and local councillors. The others are status quo, or hybrid models.

And if you’re still reading, and you travel south through the City of Kawartha Lakes, you may see a campaign sign for Doug Ford for mayor.
